Possible New Case of Mad Cow Disease Found in US

The U.S. Agriculture Department says it is checking a possible new case of mad cow disease after 11 months since the first case was reported.

On Friday, the Agriculture Department gave no information on the location or origin of the slaughtered animal and said results from advanced tests were not expected for at least four to seven days.

In the only confirmed U.S. case of the disease, a Canadian-born Holstein cow was found to have been infected in Washington state last December. More than 40 countries, including South Korea and Japan, subsequently cut off imports of U.S. beef.

Last month, U.S. officials had requested Seoul to lift its ban on U.S. beef.
