China: Media Control Should Follow N. Korea, Cuba

A Hong Kong-based magazine reports that China's Communist Party has urged Chinese media officials to glean lessons from their North Korean and Cuban counterparts in retaining tight control over issues of ideology.

At a nationwide media convention held in September, a leading Chinese communist party official hailed the North and Cuba for effectively controling their media.

The official reportedly said that although Pyongyang's economy is temporarily going through rough waters, its political regime remains precisely consistent.

The magazine said the materials distributed during the convention warned the Chinese media not to randomly report incidents such as explosions, riots or demonstrations, and pressed for it to only cover uniform reports released by the state-controlled Xinhua news agency.
