3,000 N.Korea Defectors Completed IT Education in Seoul

Some 3,000 North Korean defectors to South Korea have completed information technology (IT) education courses provided by the Seoul government as of last month.

The program, launched in October 2002, seeks to provide former North Koreans with a basic technological mindset for them to effectively adapt to life in capitalist Seoul.

Seoul officials said the number of defectors completing the IT program is fast growing while the courses are growing more intensive.

Accordingly, the classes have been increased to eight venues nationwide, including four in the capital city, while the government has increased state subsidies to accomodate more students.

The IT program comprises essential courses to get familiarized with the Internet, word processing and other office programs in order to prepare for new jobs.
