Unification Minister Chung Dong-young will visit North Korea Wednesday to attend a ceremony to mark the first products to be manufactured in the Gaesong Industrial Park.
The Ministry of Unification said North Korea sent an invitation Tuesday asking for the attendance of some 400 South Koreans including Minister Chung at a joint ceremony to be held in the park Wednesday.
The trip would be Chung's first visit to the North since he took office in July.
The ceremony is to celebrate the first products - kitchenware by Living Art - to be produced in the complex's pilot facility. Living Art is one of 15 South Korean firms that have relocated some of their facilities to the industrial park.
The Seoul government believes that the synergy effect from combining the South's capital with the North's cheap but skilled labor makes for a win-win situation at the Gaesong Industrial Complex, the centerpiece of inter-Korean economic cooperation efforts.
