Japanese Leaders Adopt Resolution Urging Sanctions on N.Korea

Japanese legislators urged their government to impose economic penalties on North Korea after the communist country tried last week to pass off a box of mixed human bones as the remains of a woman who was kidnapped from Japan years ago.

The Japanese Diet Tuesday held a meeting of a special committee on the North’s abductions and adopted a non-binding resolution calling for limiting remittances to the North and banning North Korean ships from entering ports in Japan.

In the resolution, the lawmakers also urged the government to suspend humanitarian support including food aid until the North provides a sincere explanation on the case.

Japanese officials announced last week the results of DNA tests on a box of bones and ashes that North Korea had said contained the remains of Megumi Yokota, a Japanese woman believed kidnapped by North Korean agents at the age of 13.
