North Korea says it cannot accept as accurate the results of the Japanese DNA tests that have cast doubt over the authenticity of the supposed remains of Japanese abductees recently handed over to Tokyo by Pyongyang.
A spokesman for the North's Foreign Ministry told the state-run Korean Central News Agency Friday that Pyongyang sees further government contact between the North and Japan as "meaningless" due to Tokyo's supposedly 'anti-North Korea maneuvering'.
The unidentified spokesman also called on Japan to offer an apology for doubting the authenticity of the disputed remains, urging Tokyo to return what the North claims are the remains of Megumi Yokota, one of the abductees.
The spokesman said the DNA test results of the Tokyo government had upended Pyongyang's 'sincere efforts' in the abductee issue.
The remarks came amid growing calls in Japan for the imposition of sanctions against the North after DNA tests suggested that the mixed bones and ashes identified by Pyongyang as the remains of previously kidnapped Japanese nationals, were actually those of someone else.
