Precision satellite photos of military facilities in North Korea have been released in the U.S.
The photos were taken 500 kilometers above ground level in 2002 during a memorial day celebration commemorating the founding of the North Korean military. The high-resolution images accurately captured even the letters on a parade's card section.
Ninety percent of the combat planes shown in the photos are believed to have been made in the 1950s. A Russian-made AN2 fighter that was used to infiltrate North Korean spies into the South was also recorded on the satellite pictures.
The Washington-based Carnegie institute says that at least 20 airfields equipped with underground hangars exist in the communist North, according to its two-year analysis of some 100 high-resolution digital satellite photos of North Korea.
Such photos show that Pyongyang has also developed an amphibious hovercraft that can operate at a maximum speed of 96 kilometers-per-hour and carry as many as 50 personnel.
