A U.N. expert says North Korea’s agricultural production has reached its limit and that North Korea might suffer from a long-term food crisis and social tension without agricultural reforms.
Henri Josserand, head of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) early warning service, who is currently in Kobe, Japan to attend a U.N. emergency management meeting, said on Friday all land available in the communist state, including lots along railroads, roads and flower pots, are being utilized for farming in North Korea.
He pointed out that North Korea reaped a good harvest last year, but it will not be able to increase production any more without substantial agricultural reforms.
The FAO predicted North Korea’s agricultural production would reach a 10-year high of 4.2 million tons by the coming autumn, but total demand would be aboout 5.1 million tons.
