North Korea's official news agency says the communist state has appointed its former ambassador to Kuwait as a new deputy foreign minister.

The Korea Central News Agency said the new deputy foreign minister, Kim Hyong-jun, had attended a dinner with North Korean Foreign Minister Paek Nam-sun and Chinese diplomats in Pyongyang Tuesday.

Kim was previously appointed to six ambassadorial posts in the Middle Eastern region, including Lebanon and Qatar, since August 2000.
