S.Korea Sets Import Ceiling on N.Korean Farm Produce

Written: 2005-01-27 19:22:02Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The government has imposed a limit on imports of agricultural produce from North Korea to prevent imports of non-North Korean products under a false statement of origin.

The agricultural products subject to the latest import ceilings are mung beans, red beans, soy beans and sesame.

Some importers have exploited the customs-free status reserved for the inter-Korean trade by selling third-country products under North Korean labels.

The Unification Ministry also plans to promote“contract-farming” as a long-term measure to address the problem, so that traders on both sides of the inter-Korean border can set the import volume before cultivation.
