China has suggested it may seek a working-level session of six-party talks aimed at resolving North Korea's prolonged nuclear standoff.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan proposed the idea on Wednesday during a regular news briefing, saying such a meeting could help iron out differences between involved countries before they met for a high-level session.
The comments reinforced earlier reports that Beijing had already offered to host such a meeting. Chinese officials reportedly made the proposal in Jakarta, Indonesia, on the sidelines of a conference of donor nations for the Asian tsunami disaster.
However, Kong did not provide further details on the matter. The spokesman also refused to specify what senior U.S. security official Michael Green had discussed with Chinese officials.
Green, senior director for Asia at the U.S. National Security Council, arrived in Beijing on Monday and is scheduled to visit Seoul on Wednesday.
