North Korea's top envoy to the United Nations said that his country is willing to rejoin any kind of talks on its nuclear weapons program if the U.S. pledges coexistence with Pyongyang and guarantees tangible results in negotiations.
Seoul-based JoongAng Ilbo quoted Han Song-ryol as saying in a telephone interview with the local paper that Washington should also promise non-interference in North Korea's internal affairs as a precondition to resuming nuclear negotiations.
Han was cited as saying "We have no way back now. But if the U.S. abandons
its hostile policy, we can also drop the anti-American policy. And
then why do we need nuclear weapons?"
He reportedly said that his recent statement reflects the main point of Pyongyang's February 10th declaration that it is indeed a nuclear power and will indefinitely boycott the six-way disarmament dialogue.
Han's remarks hinted at the possibility of North Korea rejoining the nuclear talks if favorable conditions are fostered.
However, on the issue of whether Pyongyang actually possesses nuclear arms, the North Korean official neither confirmed or denied the fact.
