North Korea is unlikely to accept U.S. calls to follow Libya’s example in abandoning its nuclear weapons program, South Korea’s point man on North Korea said Thursday.
In a parliamentary report, Unification Minister Chung Dong-young cited North Korea’s negative views on the Libyan model, which he said is likely to be regarded by the North as complete "disarmament."
Chung stressed the United States and North Korea should return to dialogue as both sides are clear about what they want from each other and what they should exchange with each other.
Libya agreed in late 2003 to give up its nuclear weapons program in exchange for wider Western recognition of its regime and increased economic assistance. Libya has since been cited by the U.S. as a model that Pyongyang should follow, in terms of giving up its nuclear arms development program.
