Record snowfall wreaks traffic havoc nationwide

After record snowfalls that hit the nation Sunday, traffic is getting back to normal across the nation.

The capital Seoul saw the heaviest snowfall in two decades at 15 centimeters. On Monday morning, many Seoulites reported to work late due to delays in traffic on frozen roads. Traffic authorities are on full alert as more snowfall is in the forecast.

The snowy weather has led many people to leave their cars at home using the subway, bus and taxis to get to work.

Snow plows spent the day salting major sections of the highways and national roads across the nation. Traffic policemen are on emergency duty to handle accidents.

Meanwhile, the heavy bout of snow has grounded nearly all flights to and from Kimpo International Airport.

The eastern Kangwon Province had the heaviest snowfalls. The Taegwallyong area reported 98 centimeters of snowfall as of Monday morning. It's the heaviest single snowfall since measurement began.

On Cheju Island, flight and ferry services trickled back to normal Monday afternoon.

Police reported more than two hundred 30 snow-related traffic accidents across the nation over the weekend. At least ten people were killed with hundreds injured.
