Power Supply to Gaesong Complex Likely to Begin Tuesday

Power supply to the Gaesong Industrial Complex is scheduled to begin on Tuesday at the earliest. It will be the first time for South Korea to supply electricity to the North since the division of the Korean Peninsula nearly six decades ago.

A government official said Sunday that the state-run Korea Electric Power Corporation will supply some 15 thousand kilowatts of electricity to the industrial park through a 23-kilometer-long cross-border power line.

The government had originally planned to start power provision last Monday but decided to delay the date by a week in order to supply electricity to a larger number of South Korean firms that have advanced into the industrial complex.

Observers say the beginning of the power supply to the industrial park will prove to be yet another significant milestone in inter-Korean economic cooperation.
