The nation's major umbrella trade unions are scheduled to deliver 200 tons of fertilizer to impoverished North Korea.

Sixteen members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions will deliver the nitrogenous fertilizer in eight trucks via a land route Wednesday. Upon their arrival, a ceremony marking the delivery will be held in the North's scenic Mount Geumgang resort.

An official of the trade unions said even though the amount of fertilizer is small, the unions hope that with their delivery, the South Korean government will respond to North Korea's earlier request to send 500,000 thousand tons of fertilizer.

The labor unions' delegation will return home on Saturday after holding discussions with their counterparts on inter-Korean labor events.
