Two Koreas to Meet on Historical Monument

Officials from the two Koreas will meet in Beijing Monday to discuss how to retrieve a historical monument from Japan.

The Bukgwan Monument of Victory was taken by Japanese soldiers during the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 and has since rested at the Yasukuni Shrine in Japan.

A five-member delegation from the South include Buddhist monk Chosan, the chair of the Korea-Japan Buddhist Welfare Association. The North's delegation consists of four representatives including Vice Chairman Sim Sang-jin of the Chosun Buddhist Federation.

Both sides will adopt a joint declaration on the matter after the talks.

The monument was set up in 1707 in Gilju County, North Hamgyeong Province, to commemorate the victory by volunteer troops against the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592.
