Kim Yong-nam, the head of the presidium of North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly, will take part in an upcoming international meeting that will also be attended by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
NHK quoted Indonesia's foreign minister as saying Kim would attend a summit in Indonesia of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO), which celebrates its 50th anniversary next month.
Attention is focused on whether the North Korean official will come in contact with members of the six-party talks.
AALCO was founded in 1956 as a result of the historic Bandung Conference in the previous year. It has 45 member countries comprising nearly all major nations of Asia and Africa.
The organization serves as an advisory body to its member states in international law and as a forum for Asian-African cooperation in legal matters of mutual concern.
