Daewoo Motor workers defy voluntary retirement

Written: 2001-01-26 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

Restructuring efforts at the ailing Daewoo Motor seem to have hit a snag. Company officials say less than nine hundred employees applied for voluntary retirement. That's a mere 13 percent of the management's target of 6,800 job cuts.

The job cuts are part of a 830 million dollar self-rescue plan worked out by managers earlier this month. The plan also includes other cost-cutting programs.

However, the labor union immediately denounced the layoff plans as the management's unilateral restructuring move, and threatened to go on strike if the job cuts are implemented.
