A 19-member South Korean medical team boarded a Korean Air plane bound for Mumbai, India Tuesday afternoon for a week-long operation in the quake-hit region.

The team, led by Lee Jung-ho, consists of medical doctors, pharmacists and nurses from the National Medical Center.

A Foreign Ministry official said the dispatch of the medical team came at the Indian government's request.

Meanwhile, seven members from a South Korean non-governmental organization left for India along with the medical team. They will carry out rescue activities for two weeks.

The government has already pledged US $100,000 in aid, including $50,000 in cash.
