A North Korean art troupe arrived at New York's John. F. Kennedy Airport Monday for a historic U.S. tour.
The eight member troupe led by Jon Kyong-nam, vice chairman of the (North) Korean Committee for Aiding Overseas Compatriots, was received by North Korean officials, including Ri Hyong-chol, permanent representative to the United Nations, and Korean residents here at JFK airport.
A great deal of attention is being focused on the group as their performances will be the first of the kind in the United States.
It is also the first time that a North Korean delegation has visited the United States since the inauguration of President George W. Bush on Jan. 20. The troupe will give performances in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and Washington from Saturday to Feb. 22.
The North Korean art troupe obtained its performance visa from the U.S. Department of State with the help of a U.S. Methodist Church Order which originally invited it.
