Unification Minister Chung Dong-young and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on Friday held an unscheduled meeting on the last day of Chung's four-day visit to Pyongyang.
The two men held morning talks before eating lunch together, and were joined in their meal by ex-unification ministers of South Korea Lim Dong-won and Park Jae-kyu after Kim said he wanted to see Seoul officials that he had met before.
During the meeting, Chung mostly listened to Kim’s views on Seoul’s position on North’s nuclear issue.
Chung also reiterated his government’s offer of an "important proposal" if the six-way talks resume, and the US willingness to form normal ties if the North gives up its nuclear ambition.
Seoul is hoping the meeting will serve as a breakthrough to resolve the nuclear standoff and improve inter-Korean relations.
A 40-member Seoul delegation will hold a news conference after returning home Friday afternoon from Pyongyang to announce the results of the Chung-Kim meeting.
