Unionized workers at ailing Daewoo Motor are threatening another round of strike next Monday. They are protesting management's layoff plans.
The union spokesman said the strike will affect all the three major auto plants run by Daewoo Motor.
Management said earlier it will close its main plant west of Seoul next week and will reopen it in early March. The company said the one-month shutdown has nothing to do with the strike. It said the closure is due to a growing inventory caused by slow sales.
Daewoo plans to cut 5,500 jobs by February 16th to improve the terms of the company's possible sale to General Motors. GM is reportedly reluctant to proceed with negotiations without layoffs.
Many workers have since quit voluntarily. But Daewoo still has to shed almost two thousand more workers of its total almost 13 thousand work force to meet its layoff plan.
