The nationwide optical cable network project for the high-speed information-communication infrastructure was completed in December, five years ahead of its original timetable.

Information-Communication Minister Ahn Byong-yub reported its completion to President Kim Dae-jung Friday.

The optical cable network clears the way for access to high-speed Internet services down to the lowest administrative unit.

The high-speed information-communication network links all parts of the country through the optical cable, creating an "information highway" for high-speed data traffic.

The information highway is expected to digitalize traditional industrial sectors including agriculture, fishery, manufacturing and services and will help improve productivity in public sectors.
