The government has unveiled plans to provide an additional 150-thousand tons of fertilizer to impoverished North Korea.

The Unification Ministry said in a statement Sunday that it decided to accept the North’s request for the aid out of “humanitarian and brotherly love.”

Earlier this month, Pyongyang appealed for the fertilizer aid through its Red Cross office and repeated the request during the 15th inter-Korean ministerial talks last week.

The first batch of five-thousand tons will be shipped to North Korea's Nampo Port on Monday from Yeosu Port, South Jeolla Province.

Seoul completed sending an earlier batch of 200-thousand tons of fertilizer on June 19, as agreed on at a high-level inter-Korean meeting at the North’s border city of Gaesong in May.
