European Union sources said that the EU Council had decided to invite South Korean President Kim Dae-jung in recognition of his endeavors for normalizing relations between North Korea and the EU.

The sources said, on condition of anonymity, that EU Council members reached an agreement to invite President Kim during a meeting last week.

Another source added that an EU delegation had already tapped the possibility for the invitation when the delegation met the president at the Blue House last November.

The source said President Kim had accepted the invitation in principle but has yet made any decision on a specific date.

They said that the EU will offer an official letter of invitation to Seoul soon.
