Unification Minister Chung Dong-young says parties involved in the six-way nuclear talks should exert creative efforts to realize the talks' resumption in July.
At a staff meeting on Monday, Chung, who celebrated his first anniversary at the head of the ministry last week, evaluated his recent visit to the U.S. as productive and meaningful.
The minister said he had clearly delivered the government’s position on North Korea to American officials, wherein Seoul is willing to improve its ties with Pyongyang on the precondition that the North abolish its nuclear arms programs.
Chung also briefed U.S. officials on the outcome and significance of the 15th inter-Korean ministerial meeting in Seoul.
Meanwhile, Kim Sook, director-general of the Foreign Ministry's North American affairs bureau, said in a local radio interview on Monday that no rash judgment should be made regarding the reopening of the talks.
Kim advised a 'wait-and-see' attitude, saying that even though the talks’ resumption within July sounds feasible, the North should first produce a specific timeline for reconvening the dialogue.
He further stressed that the parties to the talks consider the time ripe for resumption, and called on Pyongyang to set a timetable for its return to the bargaining table.
