According to Seoul Board of Education, the traditional preference for male children in Korean society has resulted in a disparity in the number of boys and girls set to enter elementary school when the new school year begins this March.

Among 138,000 new first-graders in Seoul -- children born between March, 1994, and February, 1995 -- the ratio of girls to boys is 8.6 to 10.

The total breaks down to 74,140 boys (53.7 percent) and 63,860 girls (46.3 percent).

The situation is not uncommon. The proportion of girls to boys among second graders, for instance, is 8.6 to 10.
