Leaders of the G-8 member nations have closed their summit in Scotland with a statement urging North Korea to return to the nuclear talks.
In a chairman’s summary released Friday in Gleneagles, the site of the summit, the G-8 leaders also acknowledged "particular concern" about the threat of nuclear proliferation in North Korea and Iran.
Capping a three-day meeting, the summary read, “on North Korea, we support the six-party talks and urge North Korea to return to them promptly.”
It also stated, “action is also long overdue for North Korea to respond to the international community's concern over its human rights record and the abduction issue.”
The two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia were engaged in six-party talks aimed at putting an end to North Korea's nuclear arms program. They met three times in Beijing but made no clear headway.
The fourth round, scheduled for September last year, never opened due to a boycott from North Korea, which claimed U.S. harbors hostility toward it.
The chairman's summary expressed concerns at the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and it emphasized the 8 members’ determination to meet proliferation challenges decisively, through both national and multinational efforts. .
