Seoul to Unveil Important Proposal

The government plans to unveil on Tuesday its so-called “important proposal” to North Korea following a National Security Council (NSC) meeting to be chaired by President Roh Moo-hyun.

A Cheong Wa Dae official said Tuesday that in the NSC meeting, top security officials will hold in-depth discussions on a proper combination of Seoul's important proposal and Washington’s own disarmament proposal offered during the third round of six-way talks in June, 2004.

The official added that the main points of the final proposal will be made public after the meeting.

Another official said the government had decided to release the details of the proposal to secure the public's understanding and cooperation on the matter.

At the heart of the proposal is a reported offer by South Korea to provide “non-nuclear” energy aid in return for Pyongyang's commitment to disarm.
