Gov't, US, Japan Discuss Strategy on NK

The government on Thursday held high-level talks with the United States and Japan in Seoul to coordinate strategies ahead of the upcoming six-party nuclear talks.

The government proposed to convert the fourth round of the talks into a one-month consultative body, noting the four-day timeframe is not enough to make substantial progress.

They also discussed how to address North Korea’s energy needs, an excuse which the communist nation has used in pursuing its nuclear program.

Earlier this week, Seoul revealed its "important proposal" calling for aid of two million kilowatts of electricity to the North from 2008 if Pyongyang completely gives up its nuclear program.

The government also proposed additional aid and fuel oil to the North, and wants the other four parties to the talks -- the United States, Japan, China and Russia -- will help shoulder the oil burden.
