USFK Denies Having Nuclear Weapons

The United States has dismissed North Korea's suspicion that the U.S. Forces Korea has nuclear weapons.

USFK Commander Leon J. LaPorte on Friday said U.S. forces in South Korea have not possessed nuclear weapons since 1991.

In its keynote speech to the six-party nuclear talks in Beijing, the North raised suspicion over the USFK's possession of tactical nuclear weapons.

U.S. forces in 1991 removed from South Korea all tactical nuclear weapons and restricted the modernization of strategic nuclear weapons, except those of the U.S. Air Force.

A USFK official added that LaPorte has clarified to domestic media that Washington has no intention to reintroduce nuclear weapons to South Korea.
