Asahi Shimbun reported Friday that China has named Ambassador to Seoul Wu Dawei as new ambassador to Tokyo, replacing Chen Jian who will soon become deputy secretary general of the United Nations.

Attaching importance to its relations with Tokyo, Beijing has picked Wu as Chen's replacement in view of his fluent Japanese and his many acquaintances in Japan.

Beijing was earlier expected to name a vice minister-level official of the Foreign Ministry as new ambassador to Tokyo.

Wu served as minister-counselor and charge d'affaires in Tokyo between March 1994 and September 1998.
