North Korea is expected to provide a special amnesty marking the August 15th Liberation Day.

The nation’s Central News Agency reported Friday the Presidium of the North's Supreme People`s Assembly approved an amnesty proposal which would take effect September 1st.

The decision was made as part of nationwide celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the ruling Workers Party as well as Korea’s liberation from the Japanese colonial rule.

However, the candidates for the amnesty were not mentioned in Friday’s report.

The mass pardon would be the first since 2002, when those who served terms for corrective labor were freed in celebration of the 90th birthday of the North’s late leader, Kim Il-sung.
