S-N Project to Search for Patriot's Remains

The two Koreas will hold working-level talks Wednesday in the North's border city of Gaesong on a joint excavation to find the remains of freedom fighter Ahn Jung-geun.

The Unification Ministry on Friday said the two sides will discuss the timetable and procedures of the excavation and holding an academic forum for the project.

Ahn assassinated Hirobumi Ito, the Japanese colonial governor of Korea, in Manchuria in October 1909 and was executed the following March. His remains are presumed buried near the Chinese prison where he was detained.

His exact burial site is unknown because the imperial Japanese government kept it a secret in fear that the location could emerge as a center of the Korean independence movement.

The two Koreas will consult China on the excavation following bilateral discussions.
