South and North Korea have agreed to hold further discussions on a joint excavation to find the remains of freedom fighter Ahn Jung-geun.

The agreement was made during working-level talks held at the North’s border city of Gaesong Wednesday.

The two sides reached an agreement on forming a joint excavation team and a project to commemorate the patriot, but decided that additional preparation and discussions with related experts were needed to find the exact location of remains.

Ahn is believed to be buried near a prison in Dalian in China's northeastern Liaoning Province where he was held after assassinating the Japanese colonial governor of Korea, Hirobumi Ito in 1909. Ahn was executed in March 1910.

The exact location of his remains is unknown, as imperial Japan kept the burial site a secret out of fears that it would emerge as a rallying point for the Korean independence movement.
