Samsung Achieves Another World Chip 1st

Samsung Electronics on Monday said it has developed the world's first 16-gigabit NAND flash memory chip using 50-nanometer manufacturing technology.

The chip can store data equivalent to 200 years of a 40-page broadsheet newspaper, 32 hours of DVD-quality movie files or 8,000 digital music files.

Samsung has also come out with the world's smallest 7.2 million pixel complementary metal oxide semiconductor image sensor and three memory-system LSI fusion semiconductors.

The company's semiconductor division said that flash memory will replace paper in future data delivery and storage in ushering in an era of digital paper.

Unlike DRAMs, flash memory chips can retain and store data even when the power is turned off.
