Officials at the Korean Organizing Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan (KOWOC) said Wednesday spectators at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan should prepare to light up before they enter the stadiums.

The officials said that the smoking ban is under discussion with KOWOC's Japanese counterpart JAWOC and the world's soccer governing body FIFA.

The scheduled date May 31, 2002 for the opening match is the World Health Organization's "No Smoking Day." The WHO strongly advised FIFA to ban smoking in the stadium, at least in the opening match and preferably during the entire World Cup.
