A survey has found that only two out of 100 North Korean defectors residing at Hanawon—a halfway house in South Korea—had previously used the Internet in North Korea.

Rep. Kim Hee-jung of the main opposition Grand National Party announced the result of the survey, “2005 North Korean Defectors’ Informatization Conditions,” conducted by the Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and Promotion.

According to the survey, only 1.9 percent of the defectors in Hanawon said they had surfed the web before coming to the South, while only 7.7 percent said they had ever used computers.
