Domestic researchers on Wednesday announced the discovery of a defense mechanism for cancer cells in a major breakthrough for cancer treatment.

A team led by Yonsei University professor Kim Keon-hong said the enzyme protein kinase casein kinase 2 protects cancerous cells from medication, and if that the enzyme is suppressed, medication is more effective against cancer cells.

The finding is posted on the online journal of the European Molecular Biology Organization.

The team has applied for a patent on the research results.
