Deputy Prime Minister Jin Nyum said Wednesday he will work for more reasonable tax rates so fewer entrepreneurs will be tempted to evade tax payments.
In a breakfast meeting held at the Hyatt Hotel, Minister Jin said, "We will pursue an overhaul of the taxation system with the aim of lowering tax rates in general."
The deputy prime minister was responding to complaints from the audience that the current tax system is unreasonable and drives many business people to break the law.
Jin, concurrently minister of finance and economy, however, said that his ministry was not considering lowering the value-added tax rate, fearing that lowering VAT would eventually lead to a collapse in the overall tax system.
Jin said his ministry will lower the special consumption tax on luxury goods and is working toward reducing the tax on electronic commerce.
The nation's top economic official added that the country's economy would recover during the latter half of the year, predicting economic growth to reach five to six percent by then.
