1st S. Korean Woman Gives Birth in P'yang

The spokeswoman for the Seoul-based Solidarity for the Reunification of Korea is the first South Korean to give birth in North Korea.

The civic group Movement for One Corea on Tuesday said 32-year-old Hwang Seon had her second daughter around 10 p.m. Monday in a Pyongyang hospital.

In her last month of pregnancy, she complained of sudden pangs while watching a performance at the North's Arirang Festival with her parents-in-law. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent a Caesarean section.

The group said Hwang and her baby are healthy and that she has asked the Unification Ministry in Seoul to extend her Pyongyang stay for two weeks for recovery.
