South Korea is tightening precautions against foot-and-mouth disease spreading around the world.

Customs officials are disinfecting incoming travelers at ports and airports across the nation. At Kimpo International Airport west of Seoul, travelers coming back from overseas are required to go through a special disinfectant board and have all meat and meat products they bring undergo a separate inspection. Authorities are also burning all un-inspected meat.

Inspections have also been tightened at Incheon International Ferry Terminal, where about 200,000 people travel to and from China annually. All incoming travelers must have their feet disinfected at customs clearance areas and authorities are now spending twice as much time as normal on taking precautionary measures.

About 50 tons of hay imported daily as livestock feed are also disinfected with formalin gas.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry banned European meat imports after France reported an outbreak of the virulent animal disease Tuesday.
