The Unification Ministry on Monday sent its condolences to North Korea over the death of a close confidant of the North's leader Kim Jong-il.

The vice chairman of the North's powerful National Defense Commission, Yon Hyong-muk, died Saturday of pancreatic cancer. He was 73.

As the first unification minister from Seoul to send an official condolence to a North Korean official's death, Chung Dong-young cited Yon's contribution to the 1991 inter-Korean agreement and the joint declaration on a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula the following year.

Chung said he hopes Yon's efforts to develop inter-Korean ties will continue.
