Koreas to Discuss Return of Monument

The two Koreas on Wednesday will discuss the return to North Korea of an 18th-century Joseon Dynasty monument that Japan recently gave back.

A Unification Ministry official on Monday said the two sides in the North's city of Gaesong will discuss a joint ceremony to mark the return of "Bukgwan Daecheopbi" and its transport and restoration.

Seoul will send to the meeting 15 members of a committee comprising public and private organizations that contributed to the monument's return.

Built in 1707 in Gilju County of North Hamgyeong Province in present-day North Korea, the monument marked a volunteer army's victory over Japanese invaders in the late 16th century.

Japanese soldiers during the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 stole the monument, which then rested in the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo before Japan gave it back.
