The Unification Ministry will conduct early next year the country's first survey of families separated during the Korean War.

The ministry on Tuesday said in its 2006 budget proposal to the National Assembly that it will identify the families based on this year's national census and select 3,000 random samples.

The government has lacked basic data to implement effective policies for separated families because it has depended on figures from related agencies.
