Gov't to Provide Financial Assistance to NK

The government plans to provide financial support to North Korea in six areas in addition to rice and fertilizer aid.

The plan was included in a report circulated by main opposition GNP lawmaker Chung Moon-hun Wednesday, ahead of a screening session for the Unification Ministry's 2006 budget.

According to the report, the government has decided to offer a total of five-point-two trillion won to the North by 2010 in the areas of agriculture, light industry, fisheries, mining, science and technology and electricity.

Chung said the government’s plan is based on what was agreed on at the tenth meeting of the inter-Korean economic cooperation committee in July.

By sector, some three-point-three trillion won is to go to electricity aid, one trillion won to light industry, six hundred billion won to agriculture, and around one hundred billion won to each of the remaining areas.
