North Korea says it has repatriated a Japanese woman who defected to the North in August 2003 for humanitarian reasons.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency on Thursday said Kazumi Kitagawa was allowed to return home after she expressed her wish to go back to Japan.

The Osaka native jumped into a river on the North's border with China to defect.

The North and Japan on Thursday resumed after a year's suspension working-level talks in Beijing on normalizing ties.
