A North Korean official has reportedly blasted Washington’s policy on Pyongyang’s human rights situation for “targeting the overthrow of the North’s government.”
According to the North’s official KCNA News Agency Saturday, the official, who is a member of the North’s delegation to the UN General Assembly, said at a UN session last Monday that Washington has actively begun implementing the North Korea Human Rights Act.
The official claimed that the U.S. law is aimed at toppling the North’s government under the pretext of promoting democracy and a market economy in the North.
The legislation was enacted in October of 2004, enabling active U.S. involvement in the North’s human rights issue and protection of North Korean escapees.
The official vowed to come up with strong measures to counter the U.S. move in order to protect the freedom and safety of the North Korean people.
The official claimed that the so-called promotion of human rights and democracy sought by the U.S. is ultimately aimed at serving Washington’s own interests.
On the European Union’s (EU) recent submission of a resolution denouncing the North’s human rights conditions to the UN General Assembly, the North Korean official urged the EU to stop being at the beck and call of the U.S. and act as a responsible body.
