Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jung-eun is scheduled to visit North Korea this week to discuss cooperation in key inter-Korean projects.
An official at the Hyundai Asan Corporation said Monday that Hyun will visit the North’s border city of Gaesong on Thursday and hold discussions with the vice chairman of the North's Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, Ri Jong-hyuk.
The official from Hyundai Asan, the main operator of South Korean tourism projects in the North, said that the firm plans to request Seoul's Unification Ministry to approve of Hyun’s visit to the North some time Monday.
Meanwhile, it is yet uncertain whether Hyundai Asan CEO Yoon Man-joon will accompany Hyun. Pyongyang has banned the chief executive from entering the communist state since last August, shortly after the corporation's former point man on North Korean affairs, Kim Yoon-kyu, became mired in a corruption scandal.
During her visit, Hyun is expected to discuss cooperation in overall inter-Korean economic projects, including steps to normalize tours to Mount Geumgang. In September, Pyongyang abruptly notified Seoul of its decision to halve the daily number of South Korean tourists to the scenic mountain resort.
